Read Aloud Book Drive
It was a picture of chaos, joyful chaos but chaos all the same as the students of St. Mary’s Anglican School rushed towards the colorful treasure chest of books that the iStandAbove Organization presented to them on the 12th of January 2010. The box containing books ranging from short fiction novels to those of a more academic variety were given as a donation to the school’s growing library, which is meant to facilitate and encourage leisure reading.
The Read Aloud Book Drive was set up to receive book donations from the community and all those willing to share with the youth of Ghana those stories they found joy in and also to promote reading as a hobby with the same youth group.
The drive’s goal was to fill five boxes with books to donate not only to the St. Mary Anglican School but also to the Osu Children’s Home and other places that demonstrate a need for the books. Over the Christmas break, we managed to close one full box and are continuing to fill the others. All boxes were artistically decorated by the participants of the Xpect Leadership Program launched in December 2009 at Alsyd Academy in Dzorwulu by the iStandAbove Organization.
The participants of the Xpect Leadership Program as a community service project covered the boxes with a plethora of designs that boasted their team names, the iStandAbove logo and even a patriotic Ghanaian flag! In this activity, the participants learned the benefits of working towards a better community by giving back to it and helping improve the situations of the less fortunate.
We are continuously filling up the remaining four boxes in order to donate them. Join us and donate a book and help someone else StandAbove!
